How does a mineral oil work?

Mineral oils work by blocking the breathing holes or trachea of insects smothering them. Unlike most chemistry this is effective at all stages of the life cycle, including the eggs. 
Mineral oils kill only those insects it covers on the initial spray application.  No residual effect on insect populations exists . . .
